Music on macOS, Linux and Windows: the easy part and the hard part

An early version of Music running on Linux, with the album list and the player at the top

Music is my personal app for listening to my own music files. I wrote it myself, back when coding agents weren’t that relevant. Version 0.1 was ready on April 25, and five days later it had initial support for Windows.

The easy part

Making the Windows and Linux versions was super easy. I already had the macOS version on my own laptop, and Xojo builds for all three from the same project.

The hard part

What was difficult was testing it on each platform. I used Parallels and virtual machines, and each system had its own surprises:

  • Linux needed performance improvements that macOS didn’t need.
  • Windows didn’t look as beautiful as macOS.

You can see it in the commits from those days: pictures that had to be antialiased to look fine on Linux, more tweaks to make the app look better on Linux, and a cached highlight color for some extra speed.

Still macOS first

macOS is my main system, so it is the one that is fully supported. Music works on Linux and Windows too. If you use it there and find an issue, please report it on GitHub.
